Proof
A design proof is a version of a design file presented for review. It can be a PDF, an image or a link to a review page, and it usually carries a version number and a date.
Why it matters
The proof is the thing the client reviews and approves. If the studio cannot say which proof was approved, the approval is hard to defend.
Example
A studio sends the client a link to v3 of a brochure proof, with the comments from v2 still visible and a due date for approval.
