Bleed
Bleed is the area of artwork that extends beyond the trim line. It gives the printer room to cut the piece without leaving a white edge when the design reaches the page edge.
Why it matters
Without bleed, a small cutting shift leaves a white sliver at the edge. The printer specifies the bleed, often 3 mm or 0.125 inch.
Example
A full-bleed brochure cover extends the background image 3 mm beyond each edge of the trim size.
